These new Bluetooth-enabled smartphone trackers from Samsung are versatile little devices. In addition to tracking your Galaxy phone, you can also use it to help locate other essential items like keys, luggage, wallets, and even pets. One of the best things about the Samsung Galaxy SmartTag is that it has a low price tag – you can easily buy it online for under $30 – and possibly get a discount to bring the price down even further.
Since it is Samsung, the SmartTag is only compatible with Galaxy devices. Samsung recommends using a phone running Android 8.0 or above with at least 2.0 GB RAM. You will also need to install the “SmartThings” app, which you will link to your Samsung account. The Bluetooth range works up to 130 yards, and you can opt-in for location tracking via the “SmartThings Find” app.
Attach one of the tags to an essential item. If you have trouble finding it later, use the ring button on your Galaxy smartphone and start following the ringtone’s sound. You can set the volume level yourself.
The Samsung Galaxy SmartTag is a tiny device with a weight of 0.459-oz and dimensions of 1.54-inches X 1.54-inches X 0.39-inches (L x W x D). It has a black, glossy design and comes with an attached battery and Quick Start Guide. The battery is a replaceable CR2032.
Samsung Galaxy SmartTag Item Finding Mechanism
After realizing that you are missing the item:
- Bring up the SmartThings app on your phone.
- Tap on the “Find” option, and from there, select the linked device you want to find.
- Just wait for the information to load and then follow the gauge on the display that shows how far it is.
This method is handy if you have trouble hearing the ringtone. The fuller the gauge on the screen gets, the closer you are to the item.
There are two different versions of the Samsung Galaxy SmartTag. There is one available with the Galaxy S21 lineup that uses Bluetooth Low Energy as its standard connection. The other version, the SmartTag Plus, will be using ultra-wideband connectivity (UWB).
With the Bluetooth Low Energy version, it’s not possible to see the tag’s exact location, but you’ll still get all the information you need to find it, such as the estimation of how far away it is and the gauge. With the UWB technology, the phone and tag communicate directly, allowing for a more precise estimate of the item’s location.
